Writing Contest for Young Whiting Residents

Whiting-Robertsdale Historical Society Writing Contest

Topic: Describe how the coronavirus pandemic has affected you and your family, how you spent your time during this period, and how you feel about that experience.

Tell your story in 1,000 words or less, and you could win gift cards to businesses in Whiting-Robertsdale. This is a contest open to any Whiting-Robertsdale student (lives in the 46394 zip code area) from the classes of 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024.

A panel of judges from the Whiting-Robertsdale Historical Society will choose the winners. The writers who best tell their stories will get to choose gift cards from a list of businesses. The first-place winner will win $100 in gift cards; 2nd place gets $50; 3rd place $25; 4th place $15; and 5th place $10.

The Whiting-Robertsdale Historical Society is the sponsor of this contest. ALL W/RHS EVENTS CANCELED UNTIL SEPTEMBER

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, all events scheduled by the Whiting/Robertsdale Historical Society are canceled until further notice. This includes the April meeting scheduled for April 23 as well as the annual dinner which was scheduled for this May. The Historical Society building at 1610 119th Street is also closed. Anyone needing to ask questions or send us information should use our website or contact me at fjvargo48@gmail.com. We are also asking people to document how this pandemic is affecting you, your family & our Whiting/Robertsdale community. Keep a journal of your thoughts & feelings, take pictures of your neighborhood & downtown Whiting, whatever you think you need to do to document this time in history. When this is finally over, the HS hopes to have people come in to our building to appear on videotape to tell their stories, just like the HS did when interviewing people about the 1955 Standard Oil fire.

Stay safe & stay at home.
